Edison Thomaz




I am a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Human-Centered Computing program at Georgia Tech. I design, implement and evaluate systems that can sense, recognize and model people’s everyday life activities in service of health and well-being applications. My research combines technical approaches from Ubicomp, HCI, Machine Learning, and Signal Processing.

Prepared and released dataset for eating detection work that accompanies Ubicomp 2015 paper. Lab and field data with over 30 participants in total.

It is official: I am starting as a Research Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin in Spring 2016. I will be in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department with an appointment in the School of Information.

Attended IUI 2015 in Atlanta this week, it was great to reconnect with friends. Icing on the cake: our paper was awarded best short paper at the conference.

My work in collaboration with UW colleagues about food journaling barriers has been named a Best of CHI 2015 paper.

Finished collecting data, data analysis begins. Preliminary results look good. Ubicomp deadline 3 weeks away.

My colleague Vinay Bettadapura has setup a project page for our work on automatic food recognition in restaurants leveraging contextual clues. This work was just presented at WACV 2015.
